The airport construction has been going on without breaks for several months, but the time pressure is building. Where have you been recently, Cortes,? The situation seems rather unusual, considering that one more wasted day may turn the project into a fiasco and shrink the businessman?s account by a few millions. Perhaps he does not care?
The count down is on. A few kilometres away from Nairobi, an airport is being built at a surprisingly quick pace. Four months ago, this area was just sand covered with dry savannah grass with a dilapidated shed which many years ago was supposed to serve as a railway station. Now the shed has been replaced with a large, modern hangar and the grass has been covered with runways under construction. A few months ago the idea to build an airport and to break the monopoly for cargo air transport services in Kenya, championed by Barthe Cortes, seemed to be doomed from the start. To name but few of the adversities: the agreement was subject to many legal gimmicks, the deadline was short, the situation in Kenya Airways managing board was unstable, the weather during rain season was unfavourable and the political situation – highly uncomfortable, recent political scandals on the VIP level considered. In spite of all, the project is on the verge of success. The impossible was made possible. It seems that the monopoly for air cargo transport services in Kenya will be abolished on August 1st ,2007.
